IEA, FAEO & FEIAP: Capacity Building Across Borders

At the International Engineering Alliance Meetings held in Mérida, Mexico, from June 8-13, 2025, the IEA acknowledged it's commitment to enhanced global collaboration.

It acknowledged the need to work collaboratively with partners such as the Federation of African Engineering Organisations (FAEO), and the Federation of Engineering Institutions of Asia and the Pacific (FEIAP).

Leadership Driving Change

This was championed by prominent figures in the global engineering community. Em Prof Elizabeth Taylor, Chair of the IEA and Chair of the Washington Accord, acknoweldged the work of FAEO and FEIAP. Eng. Refilwe Buthelezi, who serves as President of the Engineering Council of South Africa and the seventh FAEO President. A Engr. Federico A Monsada President of the Philippinne Technological Council represented FEIAP also participated in acknowledging this commitment to greater collaboration.

Building on Established Foundations

This acknowledgement of collaboration allows for opportunity to develop partnerships & initiatives between the organisations.

The International Engineering Alliance, comprising members from 41 jurisdictions within 29 countries across seven international agreements, governs the recognition of engineering educational qualifications and professional competence. This extensive reach provides the infrastructure necessary to support enhanced mobility for engineering professionals worldwide.

Looking Ahead

This capacity building initiative is expected to facilitate greater cooperation in engineering education accreditation, mutual recognition competence agreements and professional development programmes.

Under Buthelezi's leadership, there is particular emphasis on assisting African engineering institutes to become signatory members of International Engineering Alliance educational accords, which would significantly expand opportunities for African engineers to practice internationally.

The Merida announcement marks a new chapter in international engineering cooperation, promising enhanced opportunities for engineering professionals across Africa, Asia-Pacific, and beyond while strengthening the global engineering community's capacity to address the world's most pressing challenges.
